As Concept, we undertook a comprehensive refurbishment of the Royal Marines School of Music within Portsmouth Dockyard. The scope covered the ground, first, and second floors, with a full strip-out to enable structural repairs and a complete internal refurbishment. We strengthened and restored floor and wall structures and completed extensive roof works across the lower, top, and barrel roofs. This included the removal of existing materials, treatment, insulation, and installation of new roof lights to improve daylight and reduce energy demand.
We restored the external fabric through brickwork repointing, patch repairs, and concrete repairs. We refurbished or replaced UPVC windows, cills, and façade elements to improve appearance and thermal performance. Internally, we installed new ceilings, floor finishes, doors, kitchen units, and sanitaryware. We completed new mechanical and electrical systems to meet current standards. We rebuilt external ramps and upgraded the main entrance to improve access and safety across the site.

The site remained operational throughout the works, which required strict controls and clear sequencing. We planned the programme in phases to protect access and safety while keeping activities running. This approach reduced disruption and supported reliable handovers.
Working within a historic dockyard setting required care to balance upgrades with heritage features. We coordinated trades closely and applied appropriate repair methods to retain character while delivering modern performance and compliance.
Innovations, challenges, solutions
