Benn Maggs: Life as a Plumbing and Heating Apprentice

Benn Maggs is a fourth-year Plumbing and Heating Apprentice. Based in London, he is currently completing a four-year Plumbing and Domestic Heating qualification programme.

At 22 years old, Ben’s journey into the trade began at college, where he studied plumbing and developed a passion for the industry. Wanting to build on his knowledge with hands-on experience and further qualifications, he chose the apprenticeship route with us. Now in the final year of his apprenticeship programme, Ben has gained valuable practical skills and industry experience while working alongside experienced professionals at Axis CLC.

The advice I would give to anybody thinking of doing an apprenticeship in Axis CLC is to definitely go for it, the amount of new skills and experienced people you would meet will shape you in to being a better person, but not only in work, but outside of work.

Axis CLC

Experience

How would you describe your experience at the company since you started?

My experience in Axis CLC since joining the company in 2022 has been a really positive and valuable one for myself, from learning new skills that I didn’t have before, I’ve also been lucky to have loads of mentors since joining that has helped me get to where I am today.

How have you grown personally and professionally during your apprenticeship?

I have grown personally by meeting other apprentices who are on the similar pathway as me, I have also grown professionally by learning people skills and going outside of my comfort zone in different areas of my work.

How do you balance hands-on work with classroom learning, and how has that supported your development?

I balance the hands on work and classroom learning really well, both of learning links together on site and in the classroom, I find the one day a week at collage is really valuable as my mentors at my college are really experienced in my course and the resources that I have available to me are a real help to my apprenticeship and beyond.

Support & Development

Are there any mentors / team members who have supported you along the way? How have they supported you?

There have been some mentors that have supported me along the way. The main one has been Rob Mellish, a Plumber. I was with Rob for the best part of 2 and half years and his experience and guidance he has shown me has been so valuable, he was a great role model every day I was with him. My second mentor is Joel Wynter, a Gas Engineer, since my transition from plumbing to gas Joel has supported my transition to be a smooth one, as he went through the same course and apprenticeship as me he has been in my position before and he’s been someone I can talk to when I need advice about the hands on work and the classroom based.

What skills are you most excited to continue developing during your apprenticeship?

Some skills I am most excited about continuing to develop is confidence in talking to people who I haven’t met before on a professional basis.

Do you feel there is a clear path for progression within the company? If so, what does that look like for you?

There is a clear path and progression for me in Axis CLC, my progression will hopefully look like me becoming a not just a qualified plumber but me becoming a qualified gas engineer and me then learning two skills not just one.

Culture & Benefits

How would you describe the company culture in three words?

My three words to describe the company is: safety, community, ambition.

What makes you proud to work here?

What makes me proud to work in Axis CLC is the culture and growth that the business has, and you feel part of it everyday.

What do you think the biggest benefit of being an apprentice is with us?

The biggest benefit of being an apprentice here is the amount of experienced people in my department that I can pick up the phone to everyday, they are so willing to help me no matter how big or small of a question I may have for them, this is something I really do appreciate.

Looking Ahead

What are your career aspirations, and how is the company helping you work towards them?

My career aspirations are to be a sub-contractor in the future, and Axis CLC is a company that offer loads of potentially new work out to subcontractors and the company would reach out to me in the potentially future for work that could be needed doing in my department.

What advice would you give someone considering an apprenticeship with us?

The advice I would give to anybody thinking of doing an apprenticeship in Axis CLC is to definitely go for it, the amount of new skills and experienced people you would meet will shape you in to being a better person, but not only in work but outside of work. Also, I would also say that Axis CLC have an apprenticeship team, which help you through the whole way of your course which I think is so appreciated so you feel so supported.
