The Foreign & Commonwealth Office is a Grade 1 listed building and a unique London landmark. Our task was to undertake major renovation work to the interior of the building during Parliament's summer recess.

When internal demolition and refurbishment work was required for Foreign & Commonwealth Office, a Grade 1 listed building, it seemed like straightforward task. The requirements included demolition of internal walls and installation of partitions, lighting and alarms as well as general repair and decorating.

As the building is listed, all work had to be completed with minimum intervention to the fabric of the building and to criteria specified by the English Heritage Planning Authority Conservation team.

The project was to run to a tight schedule: completion needed to take place during Parliament’s summer recess, meaning the site had to be operational 24 hours a day throughout an eight week period.

With the project well underway, we discovered that one of the walls due to be demolished was, in fact, structural and we worked closely with the client, interior designer and English Heritage to find a solution. Our structural engineer designed a ‘propping’ solution that was approved by English Heritage and installed by our team.

The final task was to get the project back on track. Already working 24 hours a day on the site, we needed to bring forward later phases of project, increasing the number of night shift workers. Much to the delight of the client, the project was delivered on time and on budget.
